Today, November 6, the Verschuren Centre (VC) welcomes ten First Nations high school students to the VC lab.  Dr. Martin Mkandawire, Industrial Chair of Mine Water Management/Associate Professor - Chemistry, along with Janice Basque, Liaison Officer, CBU’s Unama’ki College, organized an after school program where students will be involved with environmental related experiments in the Verschuren Centre labs.  The program involves two hands-on sessions per month.  First day orientation will involve VC staff introducing various programs and helping the students learn about the Centre’s work.

This is a collaborative effort between CBU’s Unama’ki College and the Verschuren Centre.

Pathways fo Commercialization:  From the Lab to the store Shelf - Lessons Learned

So you want to go into business?  How do you do it?  The recipe seems simple enough – identify a need, come up with a product (or a technical solution) that addresses that need, and then you sell it!  But very few of us ever think about the work required behind the scenes to create and sell something successfully.  This talk will describe some of the behind the scenes work that went into taking a single, vastly improved product from the lab bench and classroom whiteboard to national and international distribution, and using that technology platform to create other products. It’s essentially been a crash course in business and the choices (some good and some not so good) that had to be made in manufacturing, distribution, marketing, and product line expansion.  Of course, addressing market pain requires some clever chemistry – this will be discussed briefly in the talk.
