Bedford Institute of Oceanography

With the Government of Canada's strong commitment to combatting climate change through the creation of the Greening Government Strategy, the Bedford institute of Oceanography (BIO) contracted the Verschuren Centre to create a Strategic Energy Management Plan (SEMP) by March 31, 2019. The SEMP provided the BIO with nine reccomendations to lower greenhouse gas emissions and operating costs. These reccomendations followed the pattern: (1) improve energy efficiency, (2) electrify heating loads, and (3) meet the electrical load with on-and-off-site renewable energy.
The SEMP was well received by the BIO. The Centre supported the BIO's investigation of the thermal cistern and a successful application to the Greening Government Fund for a seawater geothermal heating system. Finally, the Verschuren Centre assessed changes to Nova Scotia's Electricty Act that will allow Goverment of Canada properties to procure electricity through a clean electricity power purchase agreement.
