A new greenhouse program will see local seniors benefitting from nutritious meals.

The initiative is a joint venture between Cape Breton University’s Verschuren Centre for Sustainability in Energy and the Environment and New Dawn Enterprises.

The greenhouse was donated to the Verschuren Centre under an agreement with New Dawn to test an innovative cold climate heating system. As a result, the Verschuren Centre is growing leafy greens that are being provided to New Dawn’s A Better Bite community kitchen for its meals on wheels program. The greenhouse became operational in late 2018.

“We’re thrilled to be able to combine the expertise of our researchers and the resources of such a strong community partner like New Dawn Enterprises,” CBU president David Dingwall said in a media release. “This type of collaboration is the perfect example of how innovative solutions can have major impact in our own communities and beyond.”

In an effort to invest in CBU’s future, and enhance the overall student experience, CBU has begun a project to replace its legacy software systems – one that embraces Cloud architecture and Software as a Service (SAAS).  After a thorough industry assessment, CBU selected the software provider, Ellucian, and their cloud-based platform, Colleague.  Ellucian is the largest provider of global enterprise resource planning (ERP) solutions for post-secondary institutions and holds the highest share of university systems in Canada.

March 1, 2018, officially kicks-off Cape Breton University’s third annual Research Month. This year, the Office of Research and Graduate Studies, in collaboration with CBU staff, students, researchers and community partners, will host more than thirty events to highlight the important research taking place at CBU.

“Cape Breton University’s faculty and students are involved in innovative, creative and world-class research across various fields and disciplines,” says Dr. Tanya Brann-Barrett, Dean of Research, Teaching & Graduate Studies. “Our researchers are very often engaged in work with positive impacts locally and globally. Research Month allows us an opportunity to showcase the high-caliber research going on at CBU and invite in members of the community who may not otherwise know about these initiatives.”
